Concrete Stain

Concrete stain is a popular option for Florida homeowners who want to do something about a drab (or even ugly) section of concrete. Perhaps you have a walkway or patio that is just the original concrete; a change of color would make all the difference in appearance. You really should consider concrete stain.

For many people, the first option would be to paint the concrete surface of the pool deck or patio. Paint is definitely inexpensive, it doesn’t take long to apply, and the appearance is initially good. We say “initially” because with constant exposure to the Florida sun, the paint will eventually start to peel. One day you will be out by the pool and notice that there are sections of paint that are cracking. Painting the concrete becomes a job that you have to do over and over.

That is what makes concrete stain a better choice for many of our customers. The big difference is that paint is just an application on the surface. When concrete stain is applied, there is actually a chemical reaction that takes place with the concrete that changes its color (rather than simply covering it up as paint does). This makes the change in color permanent; unlike paint, concrete stain never has to be reapplied.

One of the nice things about concrete stain is that no two applications are exactly alike. Your concrete patio may look the same in every spot, but there are differences that you cannot see. Concrete is porous, and becomes more porous as it ages. This means that the stain can seep into the pores and adhere to the concrete very effectively. If there have been any repairs done to the concrete in the past, the stain tends to mask those repaired sections. The concrete that was formerly just a drab surface now has an elegance about it, and a much better appearance.

It is important to note that the exact color of the finished stained concrete cannot be determined with accuracy. We can make it a certain shade, or a dark/light color choice. However, if you are hoping to match the color of a wall or other surface exactly, it probably won’t happen. It is safer to assume that the newly-stained floor will be a complementary color rather than an exact match.

In addition to the aesthetic value of staining the concrete at your home, there is a practical aspect to it as well. Over time, concrete (painted or not) can become damaged due to wear and tear. Constant exposure to the sun, continuous foot and/or vehicular traffic, and all kinds of weather conditions can have damaging effects on concrete. An application of concrete stain and sealer acts as another layer of protection from those harmful elements, and can extend the life of your concrete by many years.

If you have not done a concrete stain before, we recommend having us come in and do it for you. You only get one chance to get it right, so your pool deck or driveway might not be the place where you want to experiment. We have done this type of job many times, so we have the skill and experience to make sure it gets done the right way the first time. If you have any questions about the process, or if you would like for us to come out and take a look at your concrete to give an estimate, just give us a call. We can let you know what your total cost will be and how when the job can be done. We think you will be very happy with the results!
